Purple Agapanthus Flower

Agapanthus

The genus are placed in the onion (Alliaceae) family and is made up of 10 species from south Africa the only thing is that they do not produce true bulbs, though their thickened roots perform much the same function. Depending on the species they can be evergreen or deciduous and the leaves are long and strappy. The heads are tubular and there are many of them on tall stems and the flowers can be purple or white in mild climate they can flower in warmer months but usually the main flowering season is summer. Agapanthus is used in medicine for cardiac complaints. Some botanists believe that there is only one very variable species, but the various species seem quite distinct.

Top Tip

Agapanthus plants
bloom best with
congested roots,
so resist dividing
them. If growing in
pots, avoid overly
large containers for
best flowering.

Cultivation

They can grow even in poor soil, but if moisture and feeding starts, flowers and foliage production improves in better way. They should be planted in a sunny or half- shade place in a well-drained soil that should be deep enough to accommodate the large rootstock. Deadheads need to be removed in order to encourage continuous flowering. They can propagate by division when dormant in winter or raise species from seed.
