Digitalis

Foxgloves, members of the foxglove (Scrophulariaceae) family, came from Europe and North Africa, but also grow in many temperate climates. The genus consists of 20 species among which there are biennials and perennials and also many hybrids and cultivars. In the most cases the foliage has a look of large, heavily veined, sometimes downy leaves. The tall, strongly erect flowers start to develop from late spring. The flowers are bell shaped, in shades of pink to purple-red rarely  white or yellow  facing the flowers down.  Some digitalis species were used in cardiac medicine, those which contained potent glycosides and extracts are still used in some herbal remedies.

Top Tip

Foxgloves make
excellent border
plantings. However,
it is best to wear gloves
when hand-ling these
plants, as contact
with the leaves can
cause skin irritation.

Cultivation

The hardiness of the species varies a lot, so in temperate areas they are most easy cultivated. They need a sunny or part-shade and deep, humus-rich, moist, well-drained soil. The tall species need to be staked. The perennials propagate by division or from basal offsets, and the annuals are raised from seed.
