Purple Jacaranda Flower

Jacaranda

A member of the trumpet-vine (Bignoniaceae) family, this genus comprises approximately 50 species of evergreen or deciduous trees found in drier areas of central and subtropical South America. The shape and foliage varies but many species develop a broad spreading crown of ferny bipinnate leaves. Deciduous species may develop some foliage color before leaf fall, which is usually brief. Large, brilliantly showy panicles of purple flowers, mauve-blue, rarely pink or white flowers appear from spring to summer, depending on the species. Conspicuous seed pods follow but are not a feature. Jacaranda is a Portuguese corruption of the original Brazilian Indian name.

Top Tip

Once established,
jacarandas are
generally
fuss-free,
although they will
appreciate a regular
watering routine
throughout the
growing season.

Cultivation

Though most Jacaranda trees will tolerate some frost once established, both warm summers and mild winters are necessary to ensure that the plants flower heavily. Young trees often appear more luxuriant in light shade, and they should be sheltered from wind or staked firmly. Only light trimming is necessary. Propagate from seed in late winter or early spring or from half hardened cuttings taken during the summer months.
