Purple Lavandula Flower

Lavandula

A member of the trumpet-vine (Bignoniaceae) family, this genus comprises approximately 50 species of evergreen or deciduous trees found in drier areas of central and subtropical South America. The shape and foliage varies but many species develop a broad spreading crown of ferny bipinnate leaves. Deciduous species may develop some foliage color before leaf fall, which is usually brief. Large, brilliantly showy panicles of purple flowers, mauve-blue, rarely pink or white flowers appear from spring to summer, depending on the species. Conspicuous seed pods follow but are not a feature. Jacaranda is a Portuguese corruption of the original Brazilian Indian name.

A classic fragrance,
lavender is a favorite
for potpourri
blends. Harvest

area.

Cultivation

Lavender feels very comfortable in light well-drained soil and on a sunny position. They have different hardiness and the species can be both hard and quite tender. Need to be trimmed after flowering. Propagation: the species may also be raised from seed or from half-hardened cuttings.

Often, these evergreen shrubs and subshrubs are so full of flower after the first one or two years that there is insufficient suitable new growth for cuttings, which often readily succumb to botrytis. Seed-raised species and cultivars arc of variable habit and flower color. Layering is an option for older, leggy plants that are slow to produce new growth.

Cuttings

Take (6 - 8 cm) softwood or semi ripe cuttings from young plants in early to midsummer, trim below a node, and strip off the bottom (3 cm) of foliage. Apply hormone rooting compound and insert in free-draining medium.
