Purple Pleione Flower

Pleione

Pleione are the members of Orchidaceae family that natively came from Nepal and China. They include about 20 terrestrial and epiphytic orchids and are well known for the very high prices that superior forms fetch. They form small clumps of narrow leaves and these unassuming crocus-like plants produce a dazzling display of orchids. Comparing with the plants size the flowers are very large and have narrow petals and sepals, with a large frilly-edged lip that are often differently colored. The name of this genus came from Greek mythology: Pleione was the wife of Atlas and the mother of Pleiades.

Top Tip

Repotting pleiones
in late winter each
year allows for the
removal of spent
pseudobulbs and
time for new shoots
to settle in before
the main growth
season begins.

Cultivation

Pleione species and their hybrids in their most are hardy and I is easily to grow them with average indoor conditions on a bright but lightly shaded windowsill. Pleiones are not fussy about soil type as long as it is gritty and well-drained and are usually grown in shallow pans. When the foliage has fallen, they have to be kept dry till spring, but they need to be feed and water well during active growth. Pleiones propagate by division.
