Solanum

Solanum mostly occur in South and Central America, it is a member of the night shade (Solanaceae) family, this genus includes about 1400 species. Depending on the species, the foliage varies, it may be simple, lobed, and downy or pinnate, with large leaflets. The flowers have 5 fused petals and are followed by berry-like fruits that can be of different sizes and colors, and the flowers are usually purple or creamy white. Some species have edible parts, some of them are for their decorative flowers or fruit. What about the eggplant: Solarium melongena), tamarillo (Solarium betaceum), and pepino (Solarium muricatum) they are grown for fruit, the the most important and famous representative of the genus, that is an absolute staple of modern life is the potato (Solarium tuberosum), that is cultivated for its edible tubers. The potato occurs at high altitudes and grows well in temperate gardens, but it has tropical origins.

Top Tip

Potatoes will grow
in most areas. They
can be grown
almost all year in
warm climates, but
in cold climates
must be fully grown
before the onset of
severe frosts.

Cultivation

"Which is the best potato" among the no tropic vegetable gardens? There is a potato for everyone and it depends only on you, what you will choose: large, small, yellow, white, purple, or red. This is a crop that is used, respected and appreciated and takes up a significant amount of room. Potato requires fertile, humus enriched, and well-drained soil. Potato needs a well-lit, airy, frost-free position and is usually grown by planting small "seed" tubers, which are sprouted from late winter potatoes, though it can also be raised from seed. They have to be planted so that the tops do not emerge above soil level until passing of the frost danger. Plant in a 4 - 6 in ( 10 - 15 cm) deep furrow and backfill to create a mound. Some varieties keep better than others, they are known as main crop potatoes. They are usually left until fully mature (when the tops have died back) before harvesting. Early potatoes are used and harvested as soon as they are ready. Potatoes can rot if the soil is wet after heavy rain and they are also subject to ”blight” – the fungal diseases. Eggplants like warm conditions and in the areas where the summer is cool they are greenhouse plants and they are grown for their fruits. Though potatoes grow easily and quickly, the main problem is pollination and aphid. Indoors it is necessary to hand-pollinate with a small brush, and outdoors natural pollination is enough.
