Thymus

Thymus – low spreading perennials and sub shrubs that belong to the mint (Lamiaceae) family and includes about 350 species. They are grown from Western Europe to North Africa, and eastward to Japan though mostly found around the Mediterranean. They often have hairy leaves that form a dense mat and very fine wiry stems and minute. The heads of their tiny flowers are very showy and mostly appear in summer and can be in all shades of pink and purple, or white. Thyme is very popular among herbalists because of its oil that contains thymol, a phenol with important pharmacological properties, but commonly it is grown for ornamental reasons, as a culinary herb and for thyme oil, which is used in fragrances and disinfectants.

Top Tip

Thyme grows well in
containers. Pot in
loose fertile soil.
If you are growing
thyme indoors,
place the plant in a well-lit position, perhaps on the kitchen windowsill.

Cultivation

Thyme requires moist well-drained soil and full or half-sun place. The old dry flower heads need to be removed in order to encourage fresh growth. The selected forms must be propagated vegetative, usually from small cuttings or self-layered pieces, but all the species can be raised from seed.
