Tricyrtis

Tricyrtis is presented by 16 species of herbaceous perennials and belongs to the lily-of-the-valley (Convallariaceae) family. Tricyrtis came from the eastern Himalayas to Japan, Taiwan, and the Philippine Islands. Tricyrtis mainly grows in woods but can also be found in mountainous areas and on cliff sides. They make clumps of arching stems that are clothed with often glossy, pointed lance-shaped leaves. Despite the common name of toad lily, the waxy, widely flared bell- or trumpet-shaped flowers are often attractively marked. Depending on the species the blooming season starts from late summer and continues till late autumn. The young leaves and shoots of the native species are good for eating in Japan.

Tricyrtis species
are useful plants
for a shady border

Cultivation

These plants need cool, moist, well-drained, humus-rich soil and dappled shade and are best grown in woodland conditions. They propagate by division when dormant and by removing of the offsets from the side, or from seed. These plants have rhizomes or creeping, rooting stems. The lough clumps of rhizomes can be lifted and cut apart when dormant, or rooted solons may be lifted and detached. Plants may flower in the same year. All species can be raised from seeds. These ripen late in the growing season so are not always available in cold climates. Seeds should be sown immediately and exposed to winter cold germination may be delayed. Expect flowers in three years. One plant may furnish several stems for leaf-bud cuttings, inserted into a gritty rooting medium. In humid conditions, a bulbil the size of a wheat grain will form in the leaf axil of each cutting before winter, and the leaf will die. In spring, new plants emerge. Pot or plant out to flower in two years.
